It seems in our area that less than 50% of new construction homes have a home inspection before the home is completed. Many production builders may tell you they have their own quality inspections to check for issues. You may also think that the code enforcement inspections for the municipality will be enough to catch all the issues. Both of these statements are misleading. The quality inspection for the builder is just that, the home is inspected for paint, trim and mostly cosmetic issues with the home. The code enforcement inspections deal more with life safety concerns. Neither of these go into a detailed home inspection.
A knowledgeable home inspector will check your new home to make sure it meets the current code requirements and the manufacturer’s requirements for the other components not covered by the building codes. There are many different components and systems that work together for your home to perform as a complex unit. Even if you neglected to get a home inspection when you first purchased the home, you can still have one close to the end of the warranty period to make sure the builder fixes all the issues you have.

It is also beneficial to have an inspection prior to the installation of the drywall. The framing, rough plumbing, electrical, and HVAC can all be checked to verify there are no issues before they are covered up.
