Safety Has No Grandfather!

One of the comments I frequently hear while doing a home inspection is “This is grandfathered in, right?”  This statement is especially true from sellers.  Here is my comment on this subject:  When it comes to the safety of you and your family for the home you are buying, there is no grandfathered items.  My job is to let you, as the buyer, know all the potential safety issues in the home.  Let’s take a anti-tip bracket on a range.  If it is missing, I’m going to call it out in the inspection report.  Does it matter if the range is 5 years or 25 years old if your child opens the door on the oven and climbs on top causing the range to flip over and seriously injure your child?  It does not. I can only report on safety items.  It is up to you as the buyer to either have the seller repair them, get money to repair them or fix them yourself.

If you are in need of a thorough inspection on your home or a home you are purchasing, give us a call, we will be glad to help.
